transfer PC files to Mac

Would like to transfer PC files (MS Office, music, pictures and videos) from PC to Mac using new WD Passport External HD (NTFS formatted) to transfer the files. One time transfer to so no writing needed on Mac side after completing the transfer. Understand there are other ways to transfer files (migration asst, Ethernet, direct, etc.) but must use external HD in this case. Questions:

1) Will Mac operate with NTFS formatted external HD?

2) Will Mac read files saved on the external HD by PC?

3) Will Mac save these same files on Mac for later access/read/write by Mac?

4) What is the process to do this correctly starting with the saving of the files from the PC to the external drive and ending with the saving the files on the Mac from the external drive
