If the phone is still usable you can make an iCloud backup. And with iOS 11 there is a way to make a new backup that is unencrypted; see: About encrypted backups in iTunes - Apple Support

The password is one that you entered when you first made an encrypted backup, so you can keep guessing. To speed up the process uncheck Encrypt Backup and you will be prompted immediately. Here's a list of passwords that others have found to unlock the backup:

  • First iTunes account password (40 different users)
  • Old iTunes account password, but not the oldest one
  • Password used for almost all accounts (3 different users)
  • All digit Password created a long time ago
  • Computer/laptop login password (4 users)
