installing 10.13 on external HDs

i have 3 external mechanical HDs [clones of my 'boot' 10.12.6 HD] attached via FW800 and all 3 FAILED to upgrade to 10.13

I even ERASED 1 drive to see if that helped - didn't

my mac laptop is listed as being OK to upgrade to 10.13

this is the way i 'test' new macOS before i commit to the new OS

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), MBP 17 2.53 i5 8, GB RAM 480 GB SSD

i downloaded the installer for 10.13.1 last nite and ran the installer and wen to to bed

i woke up to my screen 'blank' - literally blank

tried keypad strokes and could not get it to show anything

as a last resort i powered down

i booted up and held down 'option' button

i saw my internal boot SSD drive my external clone volume AND a recovery external 10.13.1 volume

LOOKS LIKE 10.13 was applied

i tried to startup from my external clone volume but it took over 20 min to boot up so i pressed the power button again and restarted from internal SSD

any ideas of why external boot volume is taking so long to startup ?
