Clarify on how to reinstall High Sierra

I am having some problems with Pages, and the tech suggested re-installing High Sierra. But I failed to ask if I first need to uninstall the High Sierra that is alread on my laptop. If yes, how do I do an uninstall?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 10.2.1

Don't erase the disk.

Read How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support and follow Steps 1 - 3 under "Install macOS".

You probably ought to describe the problems you're having with Pages. Reinstalling macOS doesn't usually solve anything, unless you used some non-Apple "cleaning" product to mess up your Mac, in which case that product must be removed first. More information is necessary.

Reinstalling macOS is nondestructive to your User Account data, but as I wrote it doesn't usually solve anything and I really doubt it will change anything about the Pages behavior you describe.

It's always a good idea to create a backup first, but you ought to be doing that anyway. To learn how to use Time Machine please read How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

I admit I have not had time to duplicate the Pages behavior so I don't know if it's the way it's supposed to work or not. You would be much better off asking a Pages subject matter expert, which I'm not. There are several in the Pages for Mac forum. I am confident one of them will be able to confirm if what you're seeing is normal or not, and to suggest a workaround if necessary.

In any event don't erase your disk, don't attempt to uninstall anything, and if you want to reinstall macOS (which couldn't hurt) just create a backup first.

John: Thanks for your reply. I saved the article on reinstalling High Sierra that the Apple agent referred me to, but have not tried reinstalling it. Frankly, it sounds a little scary and I'd hate to lose stuff.

The Pages problem started after High Sierra. A couple of years ago I had set up a custom template, which I use almost daily. It's fairly simple: body type (Helvetica 12), 18- and 14-point heds (Helvetica bold), an italic for cutlines, and some custom bullets.

The template worked just fine until High Sierra was installed. Since then, if I cut-and-and-paste type from a web page, email, etc., where the format is set for body type, I end up with Roman, not the Helvetica I want. I have to re-select the pasted type and re-format it.

Not the most earth-shattering problem (unlike my iPad, which has shut down after the iOS 11.1.2 update, but that's another story...)

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

Cathy
