Adding artwork quit working?

I have the latest iTunes (12.7.1.14) and adding album artwork to home recorded albums seems to have stopped working. I have tried the normal procedure that I have done many times before. Click on "Add Artwork" and navigate to a 500x500 jpg. It seems to work but the image never appears. Thanks.
