Can I get out of restoring my phone?

My phone turned off earlier today and with charging and rebooting it won't turn on. When I plug it into my laptop on the laptop it says I either need to restore or update the phone. When I click update it says we can't do that you must restore. But if I restore I will lose all my contacts media messages etc. Why do I have to restore? Is there another way to get my phone back?
