Finder error message: You can't open the application "numbers.app" because it s in a time machine backup

I am trying to open certain applications via spotlight, but I am getting the error message "You can't open the application 'XYZ.app' because it is in a time machine backup"

This happens on some (numbers, pages for example) but not all apps launched from spotlight. The apps open normally when launched from the finder or from the dock.

I have a Time Machine located on an external HD but have never had to use it.

Any advice would be great as it's annoying because I use Spotlight to launch most of my apps!

Please read and follow How to rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support. In Step 3 you will be dragging the entire hard disk icon.
