“error occurred while updating firmware” message when updating to high sierra

Tried to update to high Sierra. get the screen with - macOS could not be installed on your computer

then “An error occurred while updating firmware Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again. Then a restart button. Restarting just returns to the same screen and I can’t get out of that screen to do anything else.

what can I do?

Hi Happyhappysu,

It sounds like you're running into trouble with completing the install for High Sierra. I don't like to see trouble when I'm updating my devices either, let's see if we can fix this together.

Let's try restarting into safe mode and running the installer. Here are the instructions from the article below:

Start up in safe mode

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.
