My MacBook Pro 13" 2012 powers off when unplugged

If I unplug my MacBook it dies immediately however if I turn it on while unplugged I can plug it in and out. Also, to turn on while unplugged I have to hold in power button and from then on the power button doesn't work to put it to sleep etc. I recently replaced the battery with an oem replacement as I thought that was where the fault lied but it persists. I was also getting very high kernel_task in activity monitor until I followed this guide. https://www.davidschlachter.com/misc/kernel_task

It was sold to me as one. It says designed by Apple in California and assembled in China on it

There are many counterfeits out there. If this is your third, stop buying from your sources. Historically, auction sites are where most of the fakes seem to appear. If you bought from eBay, report the vendor.

How can you tell it is a counterfeit? Easy--Apple never sold batteries for models with "built-in" batteries like yours as a retail service part. if it is in Apple retail packaging, its a fake.

If your MBP is the mid-2012 13-inch non-Retina, it was not discontinued until October 2016 and therefore Apple will still work on it per its policy to maintain parts and service for five years from date last production. If you want a battery that works get Apple to do it. However, your attempts at self-service may mean they can refuse to work on it. Still, worth a try.

If you insist on an aftermarket battery, the only ones that get any decent reports around here are those from OWC (macsales.com) and those branded "Anker."
