My MacBook Pro 13" 2012 powers off when unplugged

If I unplug my MacBook it dies immediately however if I turn it on while unplugged I can plug it in and out. Also, to turn on while unplugged I have to hold in power button and from then on the power button doesn't work to put it to sleep etc. I recently replaced the battery with an oem replacement as I thought that was where the fault lied but it persists.
