I have a 2011 MacBook pro with 512gb SSD and 16gb RAM running Sierra.
Looking through finder it looks like a lot of files have been duplicated ( not by me!) but this one is bugging me as its quite large and as can be seen from last screen shot "deleting" isn't an option, and when I try to drag them to trash can, the trash can changes into another symbol ( eject?)
Any ideas?
See if you can find the duplicate file(s) and delete them using one of these programs. If you go Finder/View/Show Path Bar, it will show you where it is located.

Could it be something to do with iCloud backup ? Some video clips I have
from 10 years ago appear to be getting backed up ( and sometimes
duplicated) every day

Do you have an attached external drive or USB drive that has the file on it?
If the Trash is changing to an eject symbol, do you have the file mounted somewhere? Can you change the permissions so you have read/write permissions?
I didn't have, but I have restarted my MacBook and those weird duplicates seem to have vanished.
