I can't copy most files from my external HDD to my Macbook Pro (El Capitan, 2015). What to do?

I have a 1 TB external HDD, which is formatted to NTFS, so I can only read and copy files from it. I have 300 GB of information on it that I once copied from my old Windows PC. I wan't to transfer all this data to another disk via my Macbook Pro, so I can reformat my external HDD to exFat. But for some reason I get lots of -36 errors when I try to copy all the files from my external HDD to another drive (which aborts the whole process). Just copying all those files in tiny portions is not an option for me (as 300 GB is quite a lot of data). I can't figure out how to copy all the data without getting these annoying errors... I've tried the dot_clean tool, but it simply won't work because my Macbook can't adjust/add/remove any data on that HDD (since it's formatted to NTFS). Can someone help me finding a solution for this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), null
