Can’t play messages with CarPlay in iOS 11

I’m running iOS 11.1.1 on my iPhone X, which I plug into my car via USB for CarPlay. Every other CarPlay app works fine—Maps, Music, Spotify etc.

However when I open up Messages, I can’t play back any of the actual messages that I receive. Tapping on a message doesn’t do anything. I don’t get a voice prompt when a new message comes through.

In Settings, I’ve checked to make sure that Allow CarPlay While Locked is turned to ON.

This is strange because with my previous iPhone everything worked, no problem. Is this a bug?
