iPhone X camera takes very dark photos when using manual exposure

Hello,

Last night i was at the gig taking photos with my X first time in very low light, i lowered the exposure so the stage lights won't ruin my photos. So i did what i always did with my 6s and the photos look way too dark with X.

I did this small screen capture video to show the problem https://www.dropbox.com/s/ld59gvvr05q5bta/Video 18-11-2017, 14.07.42.mov?dl=0

If i do that same very low exposure with my 6s or iPad Pro, i see dark photo, as i see on the screen and not black photo.

If i use different camera app everything works like expected, it's only affect to Apple own camera app.

I didn't find anyone having similar problem, but i think most people doesn't even use those manual exposures so it might be hard to notice.

I wonder If it's been like this since i bought it or did newest iOS update did this yesterday

This is really bad because for me manual exposure is so important, i wouldn't want to send this phone to repair, but i tried everything, hard reset and erased the phone without any luck.

iPhone X, iOS 11.1, null

Dark is what is expected, not black like my video shows. Like i said with my 6s and iPad pro results wasn't like this.

I do lot of concert photography and never had this kind of problem with my earlier iPhones, for me it's very important that what i see on screen looks same what final photo. Now it's not like that and it's guessing game to get good results. Also if i put exposure high as possible the photo looks very bad and yet the final photo isn't overburn.

So either X does lot of post processing or my phone has bug which has wrong settings for exposure tweak. I need to go to store to test this with demo unit, If they has this too.

It happens to my iPhoneX and all my friends’ IPhoneX have the same problem!

Contact Apple care for this. The staff told me to restore my phone, no luck, same problem after restored. And he suggested me to book and appointment with the shop to repair my iPhone X.

But abiviously it’s not the faulty of my phone . It’s a problem of all IPhone X

So I just called the Apple care one more time, after talk with a senior staff, send him some example photos. He said he will report the issue to Apple’s engineer, and will give me a call back in a few days.

It’s very easy to check to see if your

iPhoneX has this problem.

When use camera, photo mode or square mode (portrait, video, slo-mo, lapse don’t have this problem)

Manually change the exposure (brightness) by a tap on the screen to focus the subject and scroll up.

You can see the view on the screen appears brighter,

To compare the photo result and the screen view, please press the two side buttons to take a screen shoot now.

Ok , off course then click the shutter button to take a photo.

Now you have the screen shoot of what you can see on the screen and the photo result.

The result looks darker than the screen shoot

Also below problem will happen when you manually raise the exposures (brighteness)

* bursts photos totally lost focus(every single bursts photos)

* Live Photos brighteness appears brighter to darker from first to last film

I also tried turn of auto HDR and totally set the HDR to off, no help.

Although portrait mode take nice photos. But photo mode has much more wider angle and I most of the time I need the background details in my photos . So I have to take my iPhone 6 for photos now.....😂

Okay, this is exactly what brought me here; mine is doing the exact same thing especially when I’m on a video call in low light. I appear so black almost like a shadow in the videos. I don’t know if this is something that has to do with the front camera.

Apple needs to come up with an update to fix this ASAP. This is not what we spent thousands of dollars for. Thanks.

Yes! I’ve been having the exact same problem too! I use exposure lock and compensation almost all the time, adjusting darker in particular, and the photos turn out much darker than what’s previewed on screen, often almost black!

Not very pleased with the iPhoneX camera so far and really disappointed at Apple for not being able to fix this.

In addition, the portrait mode on the iphonex behaves differently from my previous 7+. Used to be able to focus on any part of the image within range, but now only things nearest to the camera will be kept sharp no matter how I try to lock my focus somewhere else.
