DMG files not opening

DMG files not opening

My laptop (MacBook air 2015) has never had any issues with opening dmg files until recently. Double-clicking on files doesn't do anything, even though I've confirmed I have disk utility on my laptop and that it's the default application for DMG files. I've also verified some of my files and have been able to open them in the past. I've also updated to the latest software (macOS Sierra 10.12.6), but I know this can't be the reason because after updating DMG files still worked. What could be causing my problem?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

What does Ctrl-clicking a dmg file & choosing Open with… show as the default ? : it shouldn't be Disk Utility, but DiskImageMounter found at /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app do you have that ?.

You should be able to select the bold text above, ctrl/2-finger click it, & choose Services - Reveal in Finder.

Can you open a dmg insafe mode ?.

in another user account ?
