Having updated to High Sierra all my 'Dates Last Opened' dates have vanished and now they are not registering/updating when I open files. The whole file date function generally seems to have gone very wonky. This needs a fix ASAP.
With the advent of "Recents" Apple has added a "LastUsedDate" metadata. It appears that is being used for the Date Last Opened. The metadata does not get set when you create a file, but only when opening it.
I haven't noticed it not being set when I open a file. Are you opening the files from the Finder, or from within an app?
I spoke to Apple Support and they helped me figure out that it was a specific pages document that was corrupted. There was also an issue with the "open in pages" button on iCloud.com that they are going to look at. One of the things we checked was that the document permissions were set to read and write. Also, mine being an older MacBook, the updating is very slow. I have noticed the same issue as yourself but when i use search I find the document with the correct date on.
Can you be more specific as to how dates last opened are not correct? Where are you seeing this? In the Finder? If you for example order a folder by dates last opened, do files you open not move up to the top?
What is "Recents"?
It is a search folder that is "built-in" to the OS and available in the Sidebar (via Finder Preferences if it has been removed).
Date Last Opened is not file system data like date created or date modified. It is written to the metadata resources attached to the file. I'm not certain, but it appears that Apple is switching over to using a different metadata for that purpose. It is used for the basis of Recents search folder.
The first thing I noticed when updating was that all of the 'Date Last Opened' Dates were deleted and replaced with '--'. As of today, the dates seem to be repopulating when I open a folder or file, but over the last few days I I have been unable to work out the pattern. Before today, sometimes the file info updated, other times not.
It the dates are now starting to repopulate and hold then it will be fine. I'll report back in a couple of days.
Since updating to High Sierra, Pages on my mac won't sync with iCloud and therefore my iOS devices. It shows the correct size of file but when i open it, it's not updated (having worked on it on my iPad). I have updated Pages on my iPad too. When I try going via Safari to Pages in iCloud the documents are up to date, then when I click on open in Pages it won't let me. It says I am not logged in or the user doesn't give me permission. I am the only user and I am logged in on all devices. This is a big problem for my work.
What is "Recents"? I'm having the same problem with missing "Date last opened" information for files when I open a folder. Also, the data is not being repopulated as i continue to open and close files. Will "Recents" solve that problem?

FYI - It seems that my 'Date Last Opened' are progressively repopulating when I open a file or folder in Finder.
How long did that take? (Was it hours or days?)
