Is Private Browsing mode necessary with a VPN?

In Safari v.11.0.1 (12604.3.5.1.1), if a use a VPN to access the web does using the Private Browsing mode option offer me more privacy or just redundant? Thank you.

Private Browsing and VPN are not the same. The former provides protection that is not really needed with the VPN but not because the VPN provides the same thing. The VPN provides net anonymity that precludes the need for private browsing.

When you use Private Browsing windows, Safari doesn't save your browsing history, and it asks websites you visit not to track you. Choose File > New Private Window, or switch to a Safari window that's already using Private Browsing.
