Music missing in iPhone X

Hello,

I just recently got an iPhone X and did a back-up restore with the data I had on my previous phone (iPhone 7 Plus). After doing this, I noticed that 11 GB of music (over 1000 songs) were missing from my iPhone X. I did a restore backup from what was saved to my windows-based computer via iTunes, not from iCloud. Can anyone please help me figure out how to get every single song from my iPhone 7 Plus into my new iPhone X?? Any advice on tips, tricks, apps, would be appreciated in how to fix this. I would hate to lose any of my songs.

Thanks,

Johnny K.

The restore is not the key to doing this ... what is important is syncing your iPhone X using iTunes.

I am, of course, assuming all your music is in your iTunes library on your computer.

So while your iPhone X is plugged in to iTunes, be certain your "sync music" instructions are set up correctly and perform this sync.

I am going to address only this point here that you raise above:

You are expecting music to transfer from your iPhone 7 Plus to your iTunes library.

Well, music never transfers from an iOS device to iTunes - with one exception. That exception is purchased music from iTunes. It is always assumed that your computer (iTunes) houses your music collection, and the iOS devices are peripherals that may contain some or all of that collection, but are not the primary source.

So if "the songs I am missing" that are not in your iTunes library were indeed purchased in iTunes, one way to get them into the library from the iPhone 7 Plus is to connect that iPhone, then use iTunes' menu to do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. If the songs came from elsewhere, you would have to find them on your computer and place them into the iTunes library without any assistance from iOS devices.

Hello Sberman,

I'm not an Apple Music subscriber but I did just sign up for that today.

This is likely the issue.

Go to Settings > Music and turn off "Show Apple Music" and "iCloud Music Library" for now. Then try syncing your iPhone using iTunes (12.7 or later). That should bring your iPhone up to date. Then re-adjust the settings to allow for your new subscription to Apple Music.

Hello Sberman,

I'm not an Apple Music subscriber but I did just sign up for that today. And I don't think I'm an iTunes Match subscriber. I never heard of that application before. A large chunk of my music library in my iPhone 7 was downloaded from iTunes (I purchased those albums/songs). Only a small percentage was from a physical CD or music I downloaded from another source. I hope this helps you come up with a solution for me. Thanks.

Hey Sberman,

Thanks for the reply. But I'm not clear on how that will help me get all the songs from my old iPhone 7 Plus into my new iPhone X. Can you explain a bit more maybe? I have done a restore from a backup I've done from my iPhone 7 Plus that was saved into my Windows-based computer two times and both times I was still missing music. So I'm not sure if what you're suggesting will work or not.

Hey Sberman,

You brought up a good point. For some reason these songs I am missing on my iPhone X are not being transferred over into my library in iTunes from my iPhone 7 Plus. Is there any way I can make sure my entire library from my iPhone 7 Plus is being transferred over correctly whenever I do a backup? If I do the method you suggested with your last response, it will erase the library I have on my iPhone 7 Plus now and replace it with the library that has the 11 GB (over 1000 songs) missing. Any other suggestions would be great. I really appreciate your help with this.

What a joke. I have this same problem. Year of iPhone purchases & iTunes purchases & now my latest iPhone (X) does not default to update my music. This is crazy stupid! Had a few issues getting this iPhone X up & running & more difficulty than earlier models.

I also can't understand how a Playlist that has song in my iTunes can be recognized as a playlist on the iPhone X, but has not songs present. They playlist were originally created on the iPhone 7 & are intact on my MacBook, but no songs on my iPhone X. I guess I'll have to connect my iPhone to the old Mac & dumb things down by adding manually. What a joke...
