Since you posted in the iMovie forum I assume you are using iMovie 10.1.x. In iMovie select the clip you wish to adjust. In the toolbar above the viewer select the tool that looks like a pallet. It's called color correction but has a lighten/darken slider which you can adjust to lighten your clip. Not very sophisticated but it does work.
