Old emails remarking themselves as UNread

In Mail on my iPhone 6 a few already read & opened emails will re-mark themselves as un-read, un-opened. This happens a few times a day. I have noticed that these random emails that are remarking themselves had been received and opened by me exactly one week to the day. Does anyone know how to stop this happening? It's driving me crazy. Many thanks for your help.

Hello, lyrebird56.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's my understanding that some emails marked as read are returning as unread at a later date. I may be able to help you with this. I would first check to see if this is happening on your email service providers website. Use a web browser and log onto the website, then check to see if the mail is returning there as unread. If so, then you may want to reach out to your email service provider.

If not, then this could be a sync issue. Go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Email Account, turn off mail, restart your iPhone and then go back to turn on mail. Test to see if the issue persists. If this doesn't help, use this article as a reference and remove/add the email account: If you can’t send or receive emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
  2. On your iOS device, go to Settings > Mail > Accounts.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.
