How do I stop the music controls from taking over the watch face?

Since I updated to the latest WatchOS version (4.1), when I'm listening to music through my iPhone, the music controls take over my watch face. So when I want to check the time (or see any of the other data in the complications I use), I have to physically dismiss the music controls. And for some time period after my music stops playing, when I lift my wrist to see the time (or other data), the music controls have still taken over.

Let's be clear here, I'm not listening to music via the Watch. Nor am I controlling it with the watch. When I'm listening in the car (via Bluetooth), I'm using the car's controls. When I use headphones, I use the headphone controls. (And sometimes I'm just using the controls in whatever music app I'm using at the time.)

I checked the Apple Watch app and did not find any settings that would indicate I can control this behavior. But this is behavior different from all previous WatchOS version. Someone at Apple thought this was a good idea, and no one there had the courage to tell them they are wrong.

The only time I want music controls on the watch face--ever--is if I explicitly open the Music app on my Watch. Anything else is presumptuous "design." So is there any way to fix this broken user experience?

Hi

Under watchOS 4.x, the Now Playing app is configured by default to be shown automatically on Apple Watch upon raising your wrist when playing supported media on your iPhone (and for a short time afterwards).

To turn this feature off:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Wake Screen > turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps.
