High Sierra deleted all files

After the upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra my entire hard drive has been wiped. Nothing on my desktop, documents, mail, folders etc. The applications are there but that's it. My mail is gone, my profile appears as though its been newly created.

Is there anyway i can restore the lost files or am i screwed? I haven't taken a backup in months so this is pretty shocking and depressing....

It may be that iCloud Drive was enabled when you updated.

Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support

"When you turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, your files stay in iCloud Drive and a new Desktop and Documents folder is created on your Mac in the home folder. You can move files from iCloud Drive to your Mac as you need them, or select all of your files and drag them to the place you want to keep them.

  1. From your Mac, go to Apple menu User uploaded file > System Preferences > iCloud.
  2. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options.
  3. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders.
  4. Click Done."

Make sure you are logged into your user account from the drop down menu > Log out, and into the correct account if necessary.

Verify you have your user account >System Preferences>Users&Groups

You can always fall back and try again (read High Sierra) macOS Sierra: Revert to a previous macOS version

Always have a current, up to date, redundant backup plan in place—"...most any type of data lose, system corruption, catastrophic failure, installing or reinstalling an Operating System. "

unlock the padlock in Users&Groups, use the + sign and try adding your old user name (exactly as before.)

macOS Sierra: Set up users, guests, and groups on your Mac

if you are unsure, from terminal you can see list:

dscl . list /Users| grep -v '^_'

That did the trick. Thanks everyone!

I wonder why the update deleted my old profile but kept the home folder. I'm glad it kept it but its strange that it happened to begin with.

It is not a perfect science. This is a prime example why you should always have current and up to date backup plan.

Glad this solved your problem dtjury

Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Interestingly, i found that the profile i am using (profile A) which is an admin is not the profile i normally use. I can see profile B (also an admin) when i drill down on users complete with all my files and desktop etc but when i go to users and groups, profile b is not listed. When i log in i'm only given the choice of profile A and a guest user. How can i log in as profile B and recover?
