I don't have the apple aluminum extended keyboard but, gee, thanks for the unhelpful answer. Duct tape, WD-40 really...
I find the responses on this site to be totally ridiculous or extremely insulting to my intelligence.
Jane,
I followed the two question marks with a smiley, for reasons of levity, and that all responders had simply run out of recommendations to solve the num-lock problem on your MacBook Air.
To what end would insulting your intelligence serve, particularly where it would be entirely out of character for me, and I have invested my personal time to help you?
If I am guilty of anything, it is the presumption of your sense of humor — a weakness perceived by some intelligent people that I have met.

Just to clarify, is your problem that the keys 789uiojkl now produce numbers like a number pad? If so, go to system prefs/accessiblity/Mouse and turn mousekey settings on and off, etc. and see if that helps.
If your problem is different, please describe in more detail.
my problem is different. when i use the shift key and hit the number 1 i expect to get an exclamation mark, but i only get the number 1, even if the caps lock key is on, i can't get any of the symbols above any of the numbers. and i can't get a capital letter for any letter keys except if the caps lock key is on.....
Thanks for taking the time... Actually someone said to try the light keys (f1 and f2) which I hit repeatedly and it seems to have fixed it for now. (yay!) I will take it in to have it looked at though. Thanks.

Interesting! f1 can trigger full keyboard access, which lets you navigate around the screen using keys instead of a mouse, but I don't think it should affect the number keys.
What version of OS X are you running?
Surely you mean the "caps lock" key.
No I am no
I know what
See if pressing your option key five times in rapid succession is a remedy (turns off mouse keys in System Preferences : Accessibility).
I know what the caps lock key is - you have obviously never seen a keyboard with a num loc key. My Mac doesn't have the num loc key and so I cant turn it off....to use the symbols above the numbers.
Tried that - hasn't worked.....😕
Duct tape? WD-40? 😀 If you were using the Apple Aluminum extended keyboard with your MacBook Air, I would say to click the clear key on the numeric pad which does toggle Number lock.

Ummm... do you know what the "shift" keys on a keyboard are for?
