Why don’t the notification bubbles expand to fit text?

Since my recent update to iOS11, notifications on my iPhone 6S+ look terrible. The semi-transparent background bubbles behind the text don’t seem to be adjusting to the height necessary for the character count (and the character count isn’t reduced—the words just fall off the bottom of the bubble so you can’t read anything past the first line). Why is this happening? How can it be fixed?

Definitely a bug. I experienced same issue using multiple versions of iOS 11, including 11.2.2, affecting notifications on locked and unlocked screen. Finding no solution on the net, I tried turning off notification preview (go to Settings > Notifications) which was set to Always, rebooted phone. I removed all notifications and turned preview back on (Always). Issue appears to have been fixed. If it works, a much better solution than reinstalling iOS and setting up as new...

Hello Minnesnowta Girl,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that the text for notifications doesn't appear as expected. I can surely see the notifications could be hard to read. I'm happy to help.

If you haven't already, restart your iPhone. Restarting can resolve many unexpected behaviors.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue persists, reinstall iOS with iTunes. This can resolve possible software issues. When reinstalling iOS, iTunes will completely remove your current software and install a fresh version. While iTunes will try to do this without removing data, it's a good idea to make sure you have a recent backup before trying this step.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Use the steps in the link below to reinstall iOS with iTunes:
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Please let us know if the issue continues. Be sure to include any other troubleshooting steps you may have tried.

Have a great day!

I had this same issue on my iPhone 7 since iOS 11 released. The Apple employee had no idea how to fix it so I upgraded to iPhone 8. He told me that if it still occurred on the new phone, to erase it and set it up as a new phone, as opposed to restoring from a backup, as there may be some bugs in the backup. I had the same issue on my iPhone 8 right away, so I erased and set it up as a new phone (which ***** because you lose all of your text messages). The issue went away...for about a week. I just started having the same issue.
