Map History Not Deleting

iPhone 6S running iOS 11.1.1

When I go into the Maps app and press remove on an item in my search history, it reappears.

I’ve had this issue since iOS 11 was released and restarting my phone hasn’t resolved this issue for myself.

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing or has experienced this and has been able to clear their Maps search history?

After struggled for couple days, I may have found the solution.

Using an iPhone with iOS 11, tap any POI (location) and then tap Directions button, then just cancel dialog (no need to tap Go button).

Keep doing above for 10 different locations, this will push all issue history data out.

Then, you CAN remove this newly added 10 locations.

Hello shopietiler,

Thanks for continuing our troubleshooting here in the Apple Support Communities. The next step will be to reinstall the iOS using iTunes. Please ensure you have a recent backup before doing this step.

Once your data is backed up, you can reinstall the iOS using this help article: If you can‘t update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Please pay close attention when you reach step 4 which says:

When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Wait while iTunes downloads the software for your device. If the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat these steps.

Once your iOS is reinstalled, test if the issue is still occurring. Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.

Hello shopietiler,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help. I will check this with you.

First, I recommend forcing Maps to close: Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then, restart your device: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Try deleting the info again. If you still have issues, I recommend resetting your location settings. You may wish to make a backup prior to doing this step. You can make a backup in iCloud or iTunes using this article: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once your data is safe, this article will help reset location settings: About privacy and Location Services in iOS 8 and later

Thanks and have a great day.

When you turned off the iCloud drive, did the entries disappear? If not, you may have a different situation.

The removed listings came back on my device a few days later but I have no idea from where they were archived. The only other thing I might suggest is you backup your phone to a computer and then delete the backups on iCloud.

Settings-Apple ID-iCloud then check the Manage Storage button. I cannot guarantee some data you have stored in that backup might be lost. Also, keep in mind you may have a backup containing the entries on your computer which might access your phone wirelessly although I have no proof that can happen.

Once you delete that backup try to remove the listings again and if it works, do another backup to iCloud..

Agreed, this has to be an iCloud issue. I can reproduce the issue on my MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iPad Air, and iPhone X. Went through all the tier 1 'solutions' like restoring iPhone (not from backup). Waste of time. I've sent diagnostic logs to apple support which they say they forward to the engineers. Hopefully this can be fixed at some point on the services side and all my devices will no longer have these entries reappear after attempting to delete.

Thank you for your reply and trying to help me resolve this issue. Yes it did disappear but came back so I decided to reset my location, restart my phone etc etc and I thought so far so good until a day later when I get in my car plug my phone in, the same location that I have been trying to get rid of and did get rid of was back. Unfortunately I’m just like you trying to figure out where it is being backed up to so I don’t see how to remove it. I’m not sure at this point if even a master reset will remove it.
