Moving logic pro x to a new device.

Hi all,

My wife bought a new mac book last year and I paid for logic pro x to be installed on it so I could have a play around every now and then when she wasn't using it. Well now i'm hooked and would like to buy myself a device to continue making music in my own time.

What I need to know is if it's possible to transfer everything from the old device to the new one. I don't need it copied, just moved so it isn't on hers anymore, only the new one. I don't want to pay for a new copy and i don't want to have to use her Apple ID to install it as then i'll be using her account for other apps.

Let me know if this is possible, and the best way to do it.

Thanks!

There is a legal issue and a practicle issue.

Legally, if both of you are using Logic at the same time, then you have to get two licenses, which means buying Logic twice. If only one person at a time uses it, then you need only one purches, but you can install it any machine you need access to.

So if you purchased Logic on your wife's machine, but it was acutally for your use and your wife is not using it, then you can consider that copy (license) yours. Unfortunately, you purchased it with your wife's Apple ID. However this is not a big deal, because you just go to the App Store app on your computer and login with her Apple ID and download Logic (it should display the "Install" button instead of the "Buy" button when you go to the Logic page).

After the installation, you can log out. You only have to login with your wife's Apple ID when you need to download a Logic update. To launch Logic and use, you don't have to be logged in.

For the transfer of files, this is pretty simple.

  • The installation procedure puts all the system files where they belong to, nothing to copy there.
  • Any user files are stored in the ~/Music/Audio Music App/ directory, just copy that folder to your machine.
  • If you created Cstom Apple Loops, they are stored at ~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
  • If you like to keep your Preferences, they are stored in ~/Music/Preferences/com.apple.logic10.plist
  • Of course you have to reinstall any third-party plugins and stuff

Hope that helps
