My disk is almost full. What does this mean?

I keep getting the message that my disk is almost full. What does this mean?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2013), iOS 11.1

The storage device, either hard disk drive or solid state drive, has a limited amount of space in which to store data. The system is altering you to the fact that this storage space is becoming full. This can lead to poor performance for your Mac and data corruption.
