iTunes 'add file to library' does nothing

Pretty simple. Adding a file or folder does not work. After clicking 'open', explorer closes and brings me back to the iTunes app, but nothing there is new. I have also tried putting the songs into Automatically add into iTunes, but all it does is make a folder in that folder called not added, and puts all the songs into there.

I haven't found a way to find that, but I found the problem. For some reason, I changed the file extension to m4a and it went into iTunes. I'm not sure that this is because of an incompatibility or a bug that won't let me put mp3 files into iTunes. The last time that I was able to put mp3 files into iTunes was about a year ago, so it might be because of an update that makes iTunes unable to read mp3 files.
