Thinking of using Samsung Evo 850 SSD

Before swap, download High Sierra and make USB installer. Make sure to backup with time machine. Swapped drive with a Samsung EVO 850 1TB, and do fresh install. Diskutil format the ssd as APFS and let it do the rest. Then do restore from time machine. Only problem is if you have bootcamp, you can no longer see the OS X partition from Windows side. Super fast after upgrade.

Seems best for $90. Also have used OWC SSD, but they are more expensive.

You will see a noticeable increase in speed...I put a 500 GB Samsung in my MacBook Pro 2011. Do it.

Ii will prompt you to migrate from another Mac or Drive during installation.

I was just reading your response and found it interesting since that's what I am planning to do shortly. Rather than do an upgrade of High Sierra on my existing SSD, I am using new SSD (Samsung EVO 8501TB). However, I didn't think I could just do a restore from Time Machine since my Time Machine backup will be from my existing OS (Mountain Lion).

I am still planning to do a Time Machine backup before inserting the new SSD but also planning to backup files to an external hard drive by running individual backups of the programs I will continue to use (photos, MS Office documents, etc.). My plan was to restore the files from my individual backups of the programs i will continue to use.

However, I didn't think I would want to do a complete restore from Time Machine to High Sierra since that was based on Mountain Lion. Don't I run the risk of restoring files that are no longer relevant because of the switch to High Sierra?

I would do a clean install of High Sierra and use Migration Assistant to migrate all your apps and other personal files, I believe you will get this prompt when you are installing. Just do a complete back with Time Machine. I prefer Carbon Copy Cloner. It does a complete backup of my drive. There are options to do tasks similar to Time Machine. Although I prefer a bootable backup I can use for another Mac if mine is stolen or lost. I do this almost every night.

This will work perfectly since it also uses USB-C.
