Did you restore it through iTunes on your computer after you got the message that it was unlocked from ATT?
Yes, I used the unlock code and restored phone from iTunes.
There is no such thing as an "unlock code" for an iPhone. That is not how unlocking works.

I bought this phone as a new phone. When I followed the unlock steps, I got the message that phone is unlocked. I called ATT and they confirmed that the phone is unlocked. Only when I took the phone outside the US and tried to insert a SIM there that I get the message saying unsupported a SIM. The same SIM on my old Nokia phone that was never locked before worked.
