How to access gmail account on iPhone 4?

My wife’s iPhone 4 has stopped allowing access to her email. iPhone 4 with iOS 7.1.2 In settings her gmail account is entered with the correct password but when “Done” is pressed a message is displayed: “Username or password for ‘imap.gmail.com’ is incorrect.” If she goes to the email app and presses gmail inbox a message is displayed: “Username or password for’gmail.com’ is incorrect.” The phone carrier is Verizon. It’s store representative said Verizon cannot help and to contact Apple. Her gmail account works on her iPad and windows computer. We have reset her password on her gmail account but it makes no difference on the iPhone. Thanks.

The issue probably is related to updated security in recent versions of GMail.


I had a similar problem on an older device and the only apparent solution is to allow less secure sources.


That would be consistent with your wife's experience on the other devices.


Of course, the issue of whether to permit less secure sources does have to be carefully considered.


It is unlikely the issue is related to Verizon.
