Permission denied for FCPX Library

Hey guys!

My Mac hard drive died recently and I have since replace the computer. I have 2 FCPX libraries stored on seperate external drives. I have no issue opening Library#1 on external drive#1, however when I try to open Library#2, I get the following error:

The document “[Library name]” could not be opened. Permission denied

“[Library name]” is already in use by “[old admin name]” on “[name]-imac.local”.

I have tried several methods to update permissions:

- update permission on external drive

- "get info" update permission on library file

- downloaded BatCHmod and changed ownership and privileges/Clear ACLs

The only other option that I have seen was to delete the ".lock" files that are apparently hidden. I have search and unfortunately was unable to find a step-by-step process to remove this file.

Can anyone assist or possibly provide another option to regain permission to this library?

Thanks in advance!!

When I ran into this problem (it's been awhile), I think I only had to change the Ignore ownership on this volume at the very bottom of the Get Info window (for drives only). Doing so will require an administrative account and not a regular user account — so you could go in with your admin account, make the change, and it should be available afterwards to any user account.

Thanks Luis Sequeira1!

I appreciate the step-by-step. I've unlocked padlock, however it appears I do not have access to the drive? My privilege should be Read & Write, as I have highlighted - however as you can see in the screen grab below, just under "Sharing & Permissions" it reads "You can only read". Furthermore, the option to "Ignore ownership on this volume" is non-existent...

User uploaded file

I see in your screen grab it reads "You have custom access". Could this be the underlying issue as to why I have been denied permissions in FCPX? If so, how do I update my permissions to have the same access? (My apologies in advance if this should be basic knowledge I should already have!)

Thanks again!

I appears to be formatted as "Windows NT File System (NTFS)". I assume this is the issue? If I reformat and "Erase", will it wipe the drive clean (including the FCPX library I am trying to access)?

Yes, and Yes.

Your mac cannot write to an NTFS formatted drive without third party software.

In all likelihood, you had a version of such software that is not compatible with High Sierra.

You could install an updated version, but since it is recommended to use mac formatted drives with FCP X, the best course of action is to copy this library (and anything else on the drive you want to keep) somewhere else, reformat the drive as macOS Extended (journaled) and copy back after that.

Thanks! i will give this a try.

I have found the updated Seagate software, however I will try the method you are suggesting first. Looks like it will take a while to accomplish - The library is 1.6TB and I am moving it to a (slow) shared drive (which unfortunately is the only medium I have access to with enough space). ETA for this is 2 days!

Thanks for your help and I hope this works!! I will update in a couple days.

Thanks again for all your help. I have an unfortunate update. It has taken days to transfer library to a shared drive, then wiped my external drive. I had some formatting issues with the external seagate - Apparently cannot be formatted for a mac (tried a few times). I found new software to that allows me to read and write on the drive with the new OS. All seems fine and I have spent the last couple days moving the library back to the external drive (shared drive is VERY slow).

I came into my office this morning with an error when there were mere minutes left of copying over:

"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Videos 2016.fcpbundle” can’t be read or written.

(Error code -36)"

I googled the error and could not find anything. I feel am so close to getting permission back with this library. Is buying a new external drive my only option left? Not ideal (8 TB not cheap!), but the cost of creating the videos that I have lost access to far outweighs the cost of a new drive...
