This just started after years of doing this: I connect my iPhone 7Splus to my Macbook with High Sierra. Says unrecognizable format. See image. Settings on my iphone: Formats - Most Compatible.

Where is your Photos Library stored? On an external drive?if yes, check if the file system of the external drive is MacOS Extended (Journaled) as it should be.
As a test, try to import the items with Image Capture instead of Photos for Mac. Can Image Capture read the items?
