Problem with default programs changing

Since upgrading to High Sierra I have had issues with TextEdit and Preview not maintaining their status as the default program for .txt and .jpg files respectively. I go through the usual process in control-I to set the default program, which works for that specific file but not new ones.

Strangely, TextEdit and Preview don't even show up in the list of recommended programs for text and image files respectively. I have to go to "Other..." and then select the program from all applications.

Anyone else? Any solutions to this forthcoming?

Hello, perry100.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's my understanding that your Text Edit and Preview apps are no longer the recommended apps when opening specific file types. I may be able to help with this. I'd like to know when setting the default program, are you also selecting "Use this application to open all documents like this one": macOS Sierra: Choose an app to open a file

Permanently change the app used to open a file

  1. In the Finder, select the file, then choose File > Get Info.

You can also Control-click the file, then choose Get Info.

  2. In the Info window, click the disclosure triangle next to “Open with.”

  3. Click the pop-up menu, then choose the app.

To open all files of this type with this app, click Change All.

If you can’t open a file with a specific app, the file may be damaged or may not be recognized by that app. Try opening it with a different app.

If that's not the case, then I'd see if you're still having the same issue with a test user account and safe mode. These two steps will help narrow down the issue:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!
