iphone 5s personal hotspot

I have iPhone 5s with iOS 11.0.3. I connect to my PC running Windows 10 using Personal Hotspot. Bluetooth is off; USB not plugged in. My PC displays connected to Wi-Fi. However, on my iPhone, Wi-Fi reads "Not Connected". I am happy that Hotspot works; just confused and would like explanation.

Hotspot works by providing a Wi-Fi signal from your iPhone to other devices - your PC, in this case. The iPhone relies on cellular data to transmit this Wi-Fi. Therefore, your iPhone is not connected to an external Wi-Fi signal. It simply sends out a signal of its own. It receives its data from your cellular signal.
