Time Machine fails with the following message: "Time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from because there was insufficient free space on the source volume(s).". I've attempted to free up space but was only able to increase the purgeable space, which seems to be ignored by Time Machine when attempting to create the snapshot.

it only does local snapshot "on the boot drive" backups when the external backup drive is not connected.
So connect the external, and it will do a regular backup and not try to put anything on the boot drive.
Thanks, Grant, that makes sense. Now I have to get rid of the local snapshot "on the boot drive" backups because I only have 3gb of space on my boot drive. I saw something about a command line method to do this.
I have the same issue as anero79, the problem is with the source volume, not the destination volume for the backup
If you do a regular backup, Time Machine will remove those automatically.
