Hi. A couple of suggestions.

Put your frequently used apps in the Dock. It will hold more than before.

Enable recent apps. Then you can open an app from the Home screen, and it will be temporarily added to the Dock.

The last app used in Slide Over remains accessible just by swiping from the right, as it was in iOS 10.

Finally, the Apple iPad User Guide for iOS 11, a free iBook download, describes this method for starting two apps in Split View from the Home screen.

"Open Split View from the Home screen. Touch and hold an app on the Home screen or in the Dock, drag it a finger’s width or more, then continue holding it while you tap a different app with another finger. After the second app opens, drag the app you’re holding to the left or right edge of the screen, then lift your finger. (If you don’t initially drag the first app far enough, all of the apps on the Home screen begin to jiggle, which allows you to rearrange your Home screen. To start over without rearranging, press the Home button.)"

Thanks. I've already set up my dock with the max number of apps and activated the "recently use" section of the dock. Problem is I use so many apps that at some point I need an app that is not among the dock or recently used. I then have to close up, open the app on the screen, and then access the dock.

Kinda of frustrating as I don't know which apps I need until I need them.
