Using Samsung ML 1430 printer with High Sierra

Since upgrading to High Sierra, I cannot print to my old Samsung ML 1430. When I try to print, the system gives me the option of using the printer. If I chose the printer and click print, a printer application icon appears in the dock. If I click on the icon, I see a progress window that reports data being sent to the printer, but the printer's data light does not blink. (The printer makes a little warm-up sound as if it's getting ready to print, but no data appear to come across.) The printer driver's access log reports the job as completed. The system information report shows the printer to be connected.

I have tried removing and reinstalling the printer, but that didn't seem to help. By the way, the printer gets reinstalled with the driver Foomatic/gdi.

Once on a previous OS-X upgrade, there was a problem with sandboxing (not that I know what that means), and a work-around was available. Can anyone suggest a work-around this time? Or is it time for a new printer?
