iPhone X - A problem was detected with the TrueDepth Camera

iOS version 11.1.2 (15B202)

Age 3 days old


Problem description:

1st day (November 29):

  • Freshly started iPhone and installed Face ID/recognition performed update to latest iOS version
  • Everthing working as can be expected; unlock working via both Face ID and manual pincode/accesscode

  • 2nd day (November 30)


    3th day (December 1st):

  • Try to unlock phone with Face ID --> “A problem was detected with the TrueDepth Camera. Face ID has been disabled”
  • Able to unlock with manual pincode to gather additional information on the error, found under the settings menu (red dot indicated);
    If Face ID is disabled on your iPhone X - Apple Support
  • Shutdown phone and restart;
    Unable to unlock with Face ID, used manual pincode, same error shows up within a minute under settings menu
  • "Powercycle" phone (shutdown and reboot after 10 minutes;
    Unable to unlock with Face ID, used manual pincode, same error shows up within a minute under settings menu
  • Contacted AMAC help desk, issue not seen before proposal to get technical support at an AMAC shop
  • Visit AMAC shop;
    • Explained issue and performed a "demo"
    • Send hardware diagnostic check/trace to phone, no hardware errors diagnosed after check on laptop
    • Reset phone (volume -, volum +, on/off button ±10 sec;
      Unable to unlock with Face ID, used manual pincode, same error shows up within a minute under settings menu
    • Restore to factory settings via laptop;
      Unable to unlock with Face ID, used manual pincode, same error shows up within a minute under settings menu
    • Further technical support unavailable (end of business day), follow up on Monday (December 2nd)

  • Does any one recognizes the issue above and knows how to solve this or how this could have occurred apart from DoA (Dead on Arrival)?

    I went to the vendor yesterday and got a new phone after they consulted na Apple technical engineer. So for this DoA (dead on arrival) is very rare.


    So the best advice at this moment either contact your vendor of go to a geniusbar.
