one of my USB ports is not working on my Mac Pro

I have the MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports and one of my ports has stopped working. I will say too that any movement with the charger or adapter for my HDMI or usb mouse goes out so the one that is working is somewhat unstable. I would be in trouble if I lose both - how do I restore the one not working and stabilize the one that isn't? I saw an article online about resetting the SMC? the instructions said to

shut down your Mac -Disconnect the power cord-Press and hold the Mac’s power button for 5 seconds-Release the button-Reattach the power cables and boot the Mac as usual-Hardware manager is directly related to SMC. Once you reset the SMC and reboot the computer, USB hardware functions are reset and they start working again. In case they don’t, try to other methods which are mentioned below.

since I didn't see this anywhere on the Mac Apple site I wondered if it would work??

Mac Pro, iOS 11.1.2
