iOS 11.2 System File Size

I installed 11.2 on my iPhone X and iPad Air 2 yesterday, and noticed that my system storage took a huge hit. My iPad is almost always just for traveling, so it has nothing on it besides a few streaming apps (Netflix, Hulu, iTunes Store), with nothing downloaded. After installing the new update, it is showing that the system storage is using almost 12Gb. Out of curiosity, I checked on my iPhone also, and it shows over 7Gb being used by the same item. Are these the OS sizes now or is there something else underneath that I am missing? I thought the OS sizes were supposed to be much smaller now.
