I am not sure I understand the question, but if you want to make sure you've "quit" apps just for housekeeping, you double-click, then scroll left and swipe up on any apps you don't want open in that Cover Flow style menu.

See this page from the iPhone User Guide for accessing the App Switcher with the iPhone X. http://help.apple.com/iphone/11/#/iph1a1f981ad After that, press lightly and hold on a single app, and you should see a red minus sign ➖ appear in the upper left. You can tap on that, or you can swipe the app screen upwards.
But, as roaminggnome has stated, it isn't necessary, unless you need to force closed an app that is not working properly.
There is no need to do anything like that. The iOS suspends those apps.

That method does not work with the iPhone X,since there is no home button to double-click.
That would indicate that you are following me. You need to go to your profile and modify who and what you are following, and how you wish to receive emails. If it is just from this particular thread, then stop following the thread, if it is from all threads that I respond to, then you have to click on who you are following and stop following me.

Chris, I am getting all your emails that you respond to in your discussions. Way too many???
How do I get out of the loop?

If you read the page that I provided the link for, it defines the method for the iPhone X, which says to swipe up from the bottom and pause to show the apps. From there, you touch and hold and then you will see the minus sign, and then either tap on the minus sign or swipe upwards. Either method will work at that point. I had already indicated there was no home button on the iPhone X.
