Mobile data in roaming keeps turning on

Hi,

I have iPhone 6S with iOS 11.2(15C114). I have subscription from operator, located in EU. My job is related with frequent travels, lately mostly outside EU. Every time I do switch Mobile Data -> Data Roaming to off before the flight or at the moment of my arrival. Beside of that each time the phone is turning that option to On by itself and as result I am getting huge bills and meantime disconnected from the network. The price my operator is charging the roaming data is 13EUR/MB and this turning on mobile data by itself cost me hundred of Euros every month.

Any advices are more than welcomed 🙂

When i bough my first iPhone, one of my expectations was that if I made some setting, they will remain as I did it. Till now I had no any issues with any Apple product. I have and iPhone 6 with iOS 11.1.2(15B202) which doesnt have such a problem. I cant agree that every time I travel - usually 2-3 times per week, I should start doing some restorations and etc. Yesterday I observed another behavior: turning off Mobile Data completely on both of my phones -> activating Airplane mode -> flight -> reaching another country -> switching off the airplane mode -> both phones registered into same visiting network. The result: iPhone 6S (iOS 11.2) turned on Mobile Data + Mobile data in roaming (good it was in EC country), and iPhone 6 (iOS 11.1.2) remain with Mobile data off. The problematic phone is locked to the operator sim so cant swap the cards.

Is there a way finding if this is result of carrier profile (which should not be allowed by the iOS) or is another iOS crappy bug?

The problem is that there are a few reasons why this might be happening and without knowing which one it is not clear what the optimal solution might be.

The fact that it keeps doing it may be as a result of a carrier profile which is not something you can change. Unfortunately, without a lot of tinkering that is not easy to establish.

Here is what you might try:

1) follow the steps for a frozen including a restore via iTunes

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

Beyond that, the option of a device firmware update (DFU) coupled with a manual restoration of data could be tried but the odds of that providing a solution are not very high if the previous steps fail.

2) if the phone is unlocked swap in a local sim for data, when needed, and use your primary sim only for voice.

3) turn off cellular data completely in areas where you face the risk of high roaming charges.
