If you attempt to create a new Apple ID at http://appleid.apple.com you cannot use an existing @icloud.com address as an ID as it would already be associated with another Apple ID (and you can't invent an address without first creating the iCloud account for it).

However if you create a new iCloud account from System Preferences you will be offered the opportunity to create an Apple ID which can be an @icloud.com address, which will become the address for that iCloud account. Please see Imp68's post here:

Re: I wish to transfer my Apple ID to a new iCloud account

Note that if you make your @icloud.com address the Apple ID for the account you would be strongly advised to provide a non-Apple address as a 'contactable at' address. If Apple only have an @icloud.com address for you and something goes wrong with the account you won't be able to access any messages they send you.

Hi John,

There are very basic requirements to create an Apple ID:

One of the main ones is that the user must have a valid email address (this does not include icloud); it's one they can verify the info he inputs and can send info to right away (such as a verification code or link)

Thus, if he has no email, create one. it just takes a few minutes via gmail or yahoo for example

- His iCloud will be created later and linked upon setup in device

- Another is a strong password (gives details when creating one on appleid.apple.com)

- Date of birth to confirm age

- Set up and answer three security questions

- Input a rescue email address

All of this will be entered on the appleid.apple.com page under "Create Apple ID"

Hope this helps get him started ~

The thread I linked to is about transferring an ID but the actual post I referred to is about creating a new one. Possibly the link didn't take you to the actual post (Safari is liable to ignore achors). If not, please go to the thread and find Imp68's post of June 19th, 2013 II'm banking on othing having changed since then since I can't check it myself). The method described there, starting from System Preferences>iCloud, is the only way you are going to be able to do what you want. All other methods will only allow you to use a non-Apple address for the reason I outlined above.

Thanks, Roger, but the link you provided is for transferring an existing Apple ID to a new account.

Just to be clear, I am helping someone who is moving from a PC to a brand new iMac. (he didn't need to copy any data from the PC.)

When we first started up the new machine for a new installation and attempted to create a NEW apple ID, we got a "Something's gone wrong, please try later." message. After trying multiple times, we skipped this part and continued to set up the rest of the install. (thinking we would be able to do it later.) We have tried to create an Apple ID in System Prefs/Accounts, App Store, iTunes and iCloud.com. Each time we get the "Your Apple ID cannot end in @icloud.com. Choose a different email address."

Just to reiterate, the user hasn't got a Apple ID and his new iMac had no other e-mail addresses.

Thanks for any ideas,

John
