migrating from yahoo mail to icloud mail

Hoping for a little insight on this. My dad wants to migrate from using his @yahoo.com email address to creating a new @icloud.com address. He is currently using the native Apple Mail app on his iMac, iPad, and iPhone for his yahoo email and would like to continue doing this with the iCloud email.

Right now his Apple ID is his yahoo email address. Should I consider creating an entirely new Apple ID which would be the same as his new @icloud.com email address? Or should I keep his Apple ID the same (@yahoo.com) and just add a new @icloud.com email address to his account (I think that is possible.) It looks like I'd need to having him sign out of all his devices if I create a new Apple ID, which probably wouldn't be a big deal if I was with him, but he lives 600 miles away and I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible. But I'm concerned there may be future implications if I don't just switch his Apple ID over to an @icloud.com address right now.

Thanks in advance!

He can't change his current ID address, the Yahoo one, to an @icloud.com address: he could change it to another non-Apple address but there's no point in this case. I don't reccomend creating a completely new Apple ID - for one thing any purchases he may have made in iTunes can't be transferred to another ID.

If he has already created an iCloud account and if he had enabled Mail when he did this he will already have an @icloud.com address that he created. If he never created an iCloud account he can do so in System Preferences>iCloud by signing in there with the Yahoo address, enable Mail and create a new @icloud.com address. He can use the Mail application for both the Yahoo account and the iCloud account at the same time, and simply choose which address he wants to use while continuing to sign in with the Yahoo address.
