Macintosh Performa 575 running out of memory ?

User uploaded file

My Macintosh Performa 575 with 8mb of ram runs out of memory when I try to go online.

I am using Netscape browser 3.0

Running System 7.1

What settings should I use to optimize memory performance?

32 bit addressing ?

memory byte size ?

What is the Max ram this computer can support ?

It works fine. Just when I enable Ethernet and try to go online I get a memory error.

that read "not enough memory".

To begin with, you can easily answer questions of this kind yourself by going to Apple - Support - Technical Specifications (in this case, click on "Mac desktops" under "Browse Tech Specs by Product" and then repeatedly the "Load more results" button until you reach the older Macintosh computer in question):

Macintosh Performa 575:Technical Specifications

The same method can be used for manuals at Apple - Support - Manuals:

You may want to look for The Macintosh Bible (for example, ISBN 1-56609-140-3, the 5th Edition, edited by Darcy DiNucci et al.) where detailed information about Memory control panel settings (and many other subjects) can be found.

There are several methods for finding information about a hard disk drive, apart from looking at the label. To begin with, one could select the hard disk icon and then choose Get Info from the File menu. A better way may be to double-click on the hard disk icon; the information is in the open window (n K in disk, n K available). Some formatting applications could possibly be useful, as well as utilities similar to TechTool Lite.

A Performa 575 running System 7.1 has a 2 GB volume size limit (4 GB with System 7.5). With a larger hard drive, one could create multiple volumes (each just under 2 GB).

Okay , I upgraded the ram to 64mb and the 575 does not run out of memory anymore.

Now I am having a problem setting up TCP/IP.

Is standard TCP/IP supported in OS 7.5.1 ?

I believe Networking was setup initially on this Mac because they where able to download games.

When I try to setup TCP/IP networking I enter all My netowork info but I cant tell if it is conneted or using an assined IP address. How can I check the IP settings ?

When I enter a website address I get this error "No DNS entry found "

I have the proper DNS server and IP addresses entered.

It may not be a bad idea to update to System 7.5.3 (Apple made a full system available for download). System 7.5.3 has an Apple Extras folder with a Network Software Selector. If Open Transport is selected, the TCP/IP and AppleTalk control panels will be visible (if classic networking is chosen, MacTCP and Network instead). Setting up via Open Transport and the TCP/IP control panel is usually easy (typically, DHCP is used; DNS information is often not required). Please note that you will have a limited choice of web browsers (for http, not https).
