iMovie choppy at times, making MacBook Pro slow

Hi,

My MacBook Pro seems so encounter some issues when running iMovie, when I laugh it, it works fine but after a few minutes of editing a video it becomes very choppy, and ends up making the whole MacBook choppy and slow.

Any ideas as to how to fix this?
