Mac admin changed to standard

When i went into advanced options on my admin account it told me to restart the laptop so i restarted it. After that i logged on and the account was changed from admin to standard. I tried to go into single user mode but that didn't work, and i tried going into recovery partition mode and that just came up with a black screen and a lock which i presume needs the password of the admin account but in my case there is no admin account even if i tried the password for the account when it was admin.
