Red lights flashing on iPhone X notch

Before bed (in the dark), whenever I try to unlock my iPhone using Face ID I see red lights flashing on the iPhone X notch. Is it normal? Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve turned my phone off and on, even factory reset the device to see if that would fix the problem but it didn’t.
