Update to 10.13 on 27" iMac Mid 2010 11,3 gives firmware error

I have been able to re-upgrade from an external disk from 10.6 to 10.12 but get a firmware error when trying to install 10.13. There is no Firmware password on this system. 2.93 GHz 24GB with 4TB HD.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), Hardware 11,3, 24GB memory, 4TB HD
